Character Of King Lear

Most of Shakespeare's tragedies depicts the fall of powerful people from great heights to their total destruction not only in terms of their reputation but their life also. King Lear too faced such prospects of having ruled England undisputably with no one to question him.

His hyper-assertive and naive character prohibit him to see the world reasonably, he couldn't see the true faces of his daughters who showed him the life of misery. Her daughter's flattery hides their true character. Their insidious behaviour deceives Lear into rewarding them the shares of his kingdom. His tragic flaw depicts his poor judgement of true characters of people.

He misunderstood Kent and Cordelia's plainness and honesty as their apathy towards him. The impression of their unappealing conduct changed the course of his own life. Even after retirement, he intended to live like a king which created conflicts with his daughters. His daughters didn't like his kingship, they didn't want to keep his hundred knights in their house. Even pressurised him to cut the number of his men which hurt the dignity of Lear.

Lear regarded himself above everyone. This belief of superiority waned when he lost everything: his power, wealth and children. Then he began to respect not only modesty but the lowest people. He regretted how he rudely behaved with Cordelia who was too honest and outspoken and gave her nothing and threw her like a piece of litter.

He even began to recognise the deplorable life of low strata people. Ultimately the suffering performed its effects upon him and the arrogance began to replace wiseness but the unfortunate death of Cordelia broke his heart completely and he finds no sense in living furthermore because the one who truly loved him was murdered in cold-blood. Moreover, before his death, his psychological condition worsened and he finds companionship in madman Tom (disguised Edgar) and the fool. Only Cordelia and Kent remained true to him from the very beginning.

To conclude, King Lear was a tragic figure who, due to both fate and his own flaws, saw the brutality of life and died with the pain of Cordelia
